We worked with our partner Art Studio Demetz in Italy on this custom carved-wood crucifix with inlaid Venetian mosaic tiles for St. Agnes Catholic Church in Naples, Florida.

The pieces that make up a mosaic are called “tessera.” Artistic tessera are still produced by hand on the island of Murano, near Venice. Colors are melted directly into the glass, which is flattened out, cooled and cut into many small pieces. The mosaic is then created entirely by hand.

We’ve also used mosaics to highlight marble carvings, like the front pieces for custom altars, below.
